Module 1 – Understanding The Root Causes of Picky Eating

Welcome to the first module of our online program From Picky to Empowered: Introduction to Responsive Feeding.

We have broken the content into 3 modules to make it as simple as possible – We all know how busy life can get! Feel free to binge watch the videos. Or take it easy and break it into smaller chunks! You can even just listen to the audio. When/how you access these videos, is up to you! We are just glad you are here.

We know that understanding the root causes of your child’s picky eating is not always a quick answer. Hence, we have put together this series of videos to cover a range of common root causes. You may find multiple video topics resonate with you and what may have kicked-off a picky-eating-snow-ball effect in your house.  Having a few insights into why your child is finding food challenging, will help you identify which parts of our videos and website will be of most assistance to you.

Introduction

Over the course of the next few videos, Simone, Natalia and Jo from Your Feeding Team will be talking about some of the main areas that kick-off fussy eating behaviors and common root causes of picky eating.

In particular, the videos address:

  • Sensory Systems
  • Oral Motor Skills
  • Temperament
  • Physical Issues (including allergies and digestive issues)
  • Trauma and Negative Associations
  • A Need to Control

Welcome to Module 1

Sensory Skills

How to support a child struggling to process sensory information about food: smell, touch, taste, texture, noise. Along with how they sense the world through proprioceptive input (push and pull) , vestibular input (sense of space) and their internal sense of themselves (hunger, sleep and toileting).

Oral Motor Skills

This means ‘chewing and swallowing’. If a child is only eating a limited diet, this can contribute to chewing and swallowing problems. Equally, chewing and swallowing difficulties can cause picky eating.

Your Child’s Temperament

We are all born with a certain temperament. Researchers know that certain types of temperament are connected to picky eating, such as when a person is naturally anxious, sensitive or emotional.

Physical Problems (focusing on Allergies and Digestive issues)

Sometimes children have health conditions that affect eating, like constipation and food allergies for example

Trauma and negative associations

It isn’t just physical issues or what we’re like as people that have a bearing on how we eat, what we experience makes a difference too.

A need to control

It isn’t just physical issues or what we’re like as people that have a bearing on how we eat, what we experience makes a difference too.
